Bleeding disorders are a group of conditions in which there is a problem with the body’s blood clotting process. These disorders can lead to heavy and prolonged bleeding after an injury. Bleeding, including recurring nosebleeds, can also begin on its own.
Among the more well known and prevalent bleeding disorders are Hemophilia: A & B and von Willebrand’s disease.
The total hemophilia population in the US is approximately 20,000. Hemophilia A is the most common form of hemophilia. People with hemophilia A, also called “classic hemophilia,” have a deficiency in clotting factor VIII. The clotting factor is either missing or is present at very low levels. It occurs in approximately 16,000 people in the US, predominantly males.
People with Hemophilia B have a deficiency in coagulation factor IX. It is the second most common form of hemophilia, occurring in about 2,500 people in the US, predominantly males.
Hemophilia is largely an inherited disease. However, in about 30% of the cases, there is no family history and the condition is the result of spontaneous gene mutation. While females occasionally have Hemophilia A or B, more often than not, they are just carriers of the defective gene.
Von Willebrand disease is a bleeding disorder caused by a defect or deficiency of a blood clotting protein, called von Willebrand factor. The disease occurs in between 1% to 2% of the population and is equally prevalent in males and females.
In all of these bleeding disorders, nosebleeds can occur without warning. Most care providers have traditionally recommended applying pressure to stop a nosebleed. This involves the pinching of the nose between the thumb and forefinger and holding the grip tightly for up to fifteen minutes. While effective, this methodology isn’t convenient and draws embarrassing attention to these life style impacting events. People typically look for the nearest bathroom to hide from the embarrassment and deal with the bloody mess.
